Building the Next Generation of Patriotism

The VFW Auxiliary Department of Alaska believes that America’s future depends on our youth — their creativity, compassion, and commitment to country. Through exciting, hands-on programs, we teach the values of citizenship, service, and respect for veterans while giving young people a voice that matters.

Our Youth Programs

1. Illustrating America

Art speaks when words cannot.

This national art contest invites students in grades K–8 to express what patriotism means to them through drawings, paintings, and digital creations. Winning artwork is recognized across Alaska and beyond.

2. Red, White & Blue Singing Contest

Music unites generations.

Students in grades K–12 can perform solo or in groups, singing "The Star-Spangled Banner” to honor our flag, our veterans, and the spirit of freedom. Voices from across Alaska rise together in pride and harmony.

3. Patriotism Through Literacy

Books inspire imagination and pride.

Auxiliaries host reading events and story times that celebrate American heroes, military families, and the freedoms they defend — helping children understand patriotism at every age.

4. Youth Volunteer Opportunities

We believe in service before self.

From care-package drives and community cleanups to assisting at veterans’ events, Alaska’s youth learn the importance of giving back and making a difference where they live.

5. Patriotic Art & Writing Displays

Local Auxiliaries partner with schools and libraries to showcase student creativity — displaying essays, poetry, and artwork that honor veterans and celebrate America’s values.

Why It Matters

Every salute, every word, every note of music makes a difference.

Youth who participate in these programs learn gratitude, pride, and a lifelong respect for those who serve. They become the next generation of leaders who keep Alaska — and America — strong.
